01About this book

Every why gets its own illustrated spread.

A full-color question-and-answer book for ages six to ten. Snow, rainbows, wind, stars, waterfalls and mirages each get an illustrated spread, with a scene, short answer steps and a fact worth repeating.

Volume one of Smart Kids WHY?, written by Daniel Bulmez. It takes the questions children ask about the world and answers each one on its own full-color spread: a real-world scene, callouts that walk through the cause and effect a step at a time, and a fun fact at the end. Snow, rainbows, wind, stars, waterfalls, mirages.

The idea is that the answer is visible rather than buried. A mirage becomes hot air, cool air and bending light. A waterfall becomes gravity, erosion, hard rock and soft rock. A child follows the sequence across the page instead of holding a paragraph in their head, which is why it works for browsing as much as for reading straight through.

Written for ages six to ten, and simple enough to read aloud to a younger child. It covers more than twelve everyday topics, from weather and nature through to space, landforms and light, with no screen involved.

Who it is for
For a curious six- to ten-year-old, and for the adult who will end up reading it aloud to a younger sibling.
How it reads
Each spread holds one question, a scene, step-by-step callouts and a fun fact, so a child can browse it in any order.
What is included
Full-color question-and-answer spreads covering more than twelve everyday topics, among them weather, nature, space, landforms and light.

Twins, 6 and 6, both fighting over it — that's the real review. Bright, clear, and it answers the questions I never know how to explain. Highly recommend.

  1. Justin D.

One of the best kids’ books we’ve bought in a while. The wind page got read about ten times the first day.

  2. Mark Sullivan

Bought it for my grandson’s birthday. He’s not always into books but this one stuck — he keeps coming back to the stars and mountains pages. Great gift for a curious kid.

  3. Deborah H.

Hands down a great purchase. Simple, visual, and genuinely educational. Can’t recommend it enough.

  4. Nadia N.

Hands down a great purchase. The colors are bright and the pages aren’t crammed with text. Five stars from us.

  5. Ava F.

We love this book. It answers the ‘why’ questions I never know how to explain myself. Would buy again.

  6. Priya Patel

I use it as a science starter for my Grade 2 class. The question-per-page format is perfect for discussion. Only reason it’s 4 and not 5 is I wish it were a bit longer — my kids wanted more topics!

  7. Priya V.

We like it a lot. My child picks it up on their own, which says a lot. Would’ve loved a few more pages, but what’s there is great.

  8. Michael C.

Good book, does what it promises. Good for read-aloud and for independent reading. Could use a volume 2 already!

  9. Rachel Nguyen

We homeschool and this has become our go-to for quick nature lessons. The explanations are simple but not dumbed-down. My daughter remembers the fun facts weeks later.

  10. Sharon H.

Bought it on a whim and I’m thrilled I did. She went straight for the ice section and didn’t put it down. Will definitely get the next volume.
