Volume one of Smart Kids WHY?, written by Daniel Bulmez. It takes the questions children ask about the world and answers each one on its own full-color spread: a real-world scene, callouts that walk through the cause and effect a step at a time, and a fun fact at the end. Snow, rainbows, wind, stars, waterfalls, mirages.
The idea is that the answer is visible rather than buried. A mirage becomes hot air, cool air and bending light. A waterfall becomes gravity, erosion, hard rock and soft rock. A child follows the sequence across the page instead of holding a paragraph in their head, which is why it works for browsing as much as for reading straight through.
Written for ages six to ten, and simple enough to read aloud to a younger child. It covers more than twelve everyday topics, from weather and nature through to space, landforms and light, with no screen involved.
We love this book. Simple, visual, and genuinely educational.
We love this book. The illustrations do the heavy lifting and my child actually understands the answers. Great value for the price.
Twins, 6 and 6, both fighting over it — that's the real review. Bright, clear, and it answers the questions I never know how to explain. Highly recommend.

Solid purchase, my kids enjoy it. The format keeps he engaged. My only nitpick is I wish it covered even more questions.

Bought it on a whim and I’m thrilled I did. Every spread starts with a question and the explanation is clear without being dumbed down.
